AIMPLAS produces nanomaterials of natural origin for food packaging with BIOMAC project
BIOMAC is a Horizon 2020 project that has created an open innovation testing ecosystem, preparing and scaling up technologies and solutions using naturally occurring nanomaterials for market applications.
After two years of work, the BIOMAC project will be able to offer its services to European small and medium-sized enterprises as well as research centres working with naturally occurring nanomaterials. BIOMAC is a Horizon 2020 project that has created an open innovation testing ecosystem, a collaborative environment in which technologies and solutions using naturally occurring nanomaterials are scaled up and prepared for market application.
BIOMAC’s environment provides open access to its facilities, specifically 17 pilot lines, and to its complementary services, which cover the entire value chain, from biomass fractionation and obtaining chemical intermediates to nanomaterials and nanocomposites of natural origin. AIMPLAS, Instituto Tecnológico del Plástico, is responsible for pilot line number 11, dedicated to reactive extrusion for the polymerisation of PLA and its copolymers and the production of nanocomposites from PLA.
Within the BIOMAC project, the AIMPLAS pilot plant is working with two test cases. On the one hand, in agricultural applications for the development of PLA nanoparticle concentrates for use in mulch film formulations, as well as PLA copolymers for injection moulding. On the other hand, in food packaging solutions for the development of PLA nanocomposite formulations for blown film.
