The attractiveness of cardboard
The rise of environmentally sustainable products is driving the business of Font Packaging Group, a company specialising in the design and production of cartonboard packaging, upwards.
“Packaging is becoming increasingly important in the presentation of an environmentally friendly product and cardboard is gaining ground over plastic. In addition, the growth of e-commerce has boosted demand for all types of packaging,” says Martina Font, corporate director and owner of the business along with her brother Francesc, who holds the position of general manager.
The company has invested 3.5 million in a new logistics warehouse in Penedès
Against this backdrop, the company closed the 2022 financial year with sales of 58 million euros, compared to 46 million the previous year, an increase of 26%. Font acknowledges that part of the increase can be explained by a rise in prices due to the increase in energy and raw material costs. In any case, the growth in demand has led the company to invest 3.5 million euros in the construction of a 65,000 m2 logistics centre in the town of Torrelavit, in the Alt Penedès region, where the company has a total of five production centres.
Most sales (96%) take place in the local market. The company sells to some 2,000 customers in sectors such as logistics, chemicals, food, graphic arts and the automotive industry. Font explains that the company has little presence abroad due to the nature of its business: transporting cardboard is too costly and this penalises operations. In response to this problem, the company is studying the possibility of opening a logistics warehouse in France.
With 215 employees, Font assures us that the company is profitable and that it invests heavily in R&D every year. In fact, the company has 12 patents and 10 utility models protecting its packaging designs, some of which have won awards at the Worldstar Global Packaging Awards. Innovation is deeply rooted in the company’s culture, which is why Font has launched a spin-off, called Kartox, which is dedicated to customising cardboard boxes online. This independent business has a turnover of 4.5 million euros and employs around twenty people.
