With a high growth rate of around 5 % and more, packaging printing is one of the strongest drivers in the printing industry. The online printing sector is also responding to an increased demand for packaging made of cardboard, cartonboard, corrugated, micro corrugated and Kraft materials with a wide range of options such as design, colour, embellishment, finishing and even integrated smart functions.

“Paperisation” of packaging in 2023/25

It is internationally recognised that plastic in all its variants is not a sustainable and 100% recyclable material and a high risk for our health (micro plastics). 2023 is the end date for plastic and flexible packaging materials in Europe and the USA, especially in California and other US states.

The same will be valid two years later in 2025 for Latin American countries – elimination of plastic and bioplastics in all containers, cases and packaging for export and import. In general, sustainable zero-plastic packaging products are considerably more complex in terms of design, materials and finishing as a key high-growth segment in the printing industry.
