MegaPack UN: New hazardous goods container series for the safe transport of lithium-ion batteries

We are now offering MegaPack UN, a series of large-volume hazardous goods containers. The containers are specially designed for the transport of lithium-ion batteries and are suitable for prototypes, intact, used and defective batteries.

Technological change with logistical impact

Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous today. They are used in e-cars and e-bikes, laptops, tablets and smartphones, and even power tools. The batteries’ high energy density and long service life are two of their most important advantages. However, if handled improperly, the potential for danger is high. If a fire breaks out, they not only make it difficult to extinguish, they also produce toxic gases. Since 2009, lithium-ion batteries have therefore been classified as Class 9 hazardous goods. Their transport is subject to strict regulations. The same applies to the associated transport packaging, which must also meet high safety standards.

UN-certified hazardous goods containers for increased safety
With MegaPack UN, the plastic packaging specialist has developed a container series that fulfils these requirements. The hazardous goods containers are approved for the transport of lithium-ion batteries and are certified according to ADR / RID / IMDG as packaging (UN4H2) or large packaging (UN50H). They consist of a pallet and a lid, a double-walled sleeve and, depending on the variant, a fireproof inner packaging as well as fire retardants. The appropriate equipment variant can be selected depending on the battery condition. In addition, the hazardous goods containers, like all MegaPacks, come with a folding mechanism. The containers can be folded when empty to save space in transport. The MegaPack UN is available in European standard dimensions (1200 x 800, 1200 x 1000 mm), sea container-optimized dimensions (1195 x 595, 1495 x 1140, 1700 x 1140 mm) and in XXL (2250 x 1140, 2800 x 1800 mm).
